Work It Out

“Annie”

50-40-30-20-10
Double Unders (sub tuck jumps)
Ab-Mat Sit-Ups

Post time to comments.

From San Francisco Crossfit:

It’s tough to meet a dishonest callus. They represent weeks (perhaps months) of solid, consistent effort. How can you not love your body’s ability to specifically adapt to it’s situational requirements? All that natural phenomena and they protect your hands to boot…what’s not to like?

Unfortunately it is possible to have too much of a good thing. Once in a while a little callus maintenance is in order to avoid excessive build-up and potential dermal disaster. For the discreet among us, a file in the shower while the skin is soft does the trick. For the bull-headed among us, too much chalk and not knowing when to stop will rip that little bastard from your hands post-haste…especially fun training is to be had in the weeks following such an event (so think it through before you push through).

For the rest of us, there are the unorthodox methods of callus removal:

The classic ‘Pick-at-the-dinner-table’ whilst listening to your family regal you with tales of their day…

The tooth-sharpening glee of the ‘Chomp-spit-n-stomp’…

The sensory oddity of the ‘Nail-clipper-cut-away’…

Post best callus removal method to comments. Be proud, you earned them!

it is fun to pull skin off of your hand, but not completly off. then go to other people and touch them with it.

  2. Justin Says:

9:03 AM and 1 comment? Come on guys..

  3. Sirkis Says:

half of dallas county was at the 6pm and 7pm class yesterday. how did everyone do? how did the morning group do?

  4. Stephen Perkins Says:

where do I go to find out what a double under is. I assume those numbers are the reps you do, right?

  5. Eric Says:

I have gone through all sorts of callous removal techniques. I have settled on the shaving technique as the best way to avoid splitting them open. I liked the nail clipper cut away technique until the rough edges would pull away and hurt like a bitch.

  6. Spencer Says:

justin ant & perk - missed you guys this morning!

  7. Ant Says:

I am going to the high noon class today. Stay tuned Justin.

  8. Mark Says:

Stephen - double unders are with a jump rope. The rope passes under your feet twice in a single jump.

I suck at them so I do tuck jumps. They’re harder but I can do them faster.

  9. Justin Says:

    Ant: Roger that.

Spencer: I am on temporary 6AM sabbatical since I have been logging rather late evenings to prepare for a mid-term on Thursday. I’ll be back by the end of the week…

Stephen: For a double under, pass the jump rope under your feet twice for during each jump.

Sam and Graham: Helluva job last night with the new people last night. Although I have not visited any other affiliates, I would be willing to bet that your explanation of the fundamentals is equaled by few. I listened to a lot of what you said for the first time and now feel prepared to make the bodybuilders at SMU look like schmucks.

Everyone else: I am a sucker for the nail file. I find myself in admiration of how smooth it gets my hands. I certainly have “filer’s remorse” though as I never want to file them down after working so hard to get such solid callouses.

  10. Jerbear Says:

Gonna have to agree with eric on this one. Shave them down!

  11. Lindsey Says:

11:29 with tuck jumps. Those situps were especially hard for me this a.m. for some reason. I think I’ll blame it on how early it was.

  12. dean. Says:

i like to multi-task my calluses (calli?):
    1. you can use them to sand down wood or even automotive paint.
    2. your sensitivity to heat is reduced so you can practically flip a burger on the grill with your palm.
i once chewed a callus and subsequently ripped off 1/3 of the skin on my attached ring finger. think of it as like a hang nail, but a hang callus.

  13. Eric Says:

oh man, the hang callus is devastating. I have had many run-ins with this. Every time you wash your hands or take a shower you are greeted with the best stinging pain ever.

  14. Travis Says:

10:58 rxd. Ant will probably do with a vest.

I use a rat tail file on my callouses. It is a small three-sided steel file intended for filing steel or wood. It came it a set with a rasp, which is another tool, like a cheese grater, used to take of more material per stroke.

I’ll be out Wednesday and Thursday for early work.

  15. Ant Says:

    already

  16. Koy Says:

    double unders = /wrists

  17. Sirkis Says:

3:1 odds i get pissed and throw the jump rope, any takers?

  18. Mel Says:

Bobby is the Pick at the Dinner table and then throw the skin at you type…. EWWWW!!!!

  19. Eric Says:

I just had a huge buffalo burger w/o bun (obviously) topped with shrooms, yellow peppers, and onions. FTW.

  20. MarkF Says:

13.10 w/ tuck jumps — I was draggin’ a five bottom plow this morning — pitiful.

  21. Jerbear Says:

Last friday’s warmup for Bobby = Tabata hit ankles with jump rope

  22. Stephen Perkins Says:

Spencer- If you felt like I do right now, you would understand why I was unable to go in the morning. Mad respect to clean and jerks!!!!

  23. gralph Says:

    Ant or Justin, yoga tonight?

  24. Justin Says:

I cannot, I am going to the 7pm WOD. This week sucks for me…I’ll be back in the routine next week.

  25. Eric Says:

Just wanted to let anyone know who might have been eyeing that conveniently located Dallas PD CrossFit Level 1 Cert on October 25-26 that I just signed up. Anyone else that decides to take the plunge let me know and we can figure out a carpool perhaps.

  26. Sirkis Says:

just get arrested. im sure they will take you right there. no car pool needed

  27. Ant Says:

    6:45 rxd - 25# vest

    G$ -yes.

  28. Patrick Says:

    good job noon crew, 8:35

  29. Patrick Says:

sirk, getting arrested probably wont get you in the right facility to get the certification. but if you decide to go that way and get arrested, dont drop the soap.

  30. gralph Says:

    Ant - cash money

  31. Chris Says:

nothing to contribute to today’s discussion. To paraphrase Cpt. Flint (from Jaws for those of you under 30) “You’ve got city hands mister! You’ve been counting money all your life!”

    12:39 w/ tuck jumps

  32. Spencer Says:

    just wait chris…just you wait

  33. Patrick Says:

sorry to say my nite time was slower than my noon time 9:05

  34. Koy Slice Says:

    6:40 sub tuck jumps.

  35. Jerbear Says:

    10:15 tuck jumps

remind me to never pick the mystery box

  36. Koy Slice Says:

palabra, I was hoping to get a 75lb TGU.

  37. Sammy Says:

    5:02ihatedoubleunders
Koy Slice, we’ll get it in next time.
    Mystery box is a go.
    Ronnie=character from Mad Max

  38. Justin Says:

4:33…followed by my first muscle up….followed by a pathetic superman hold where I was crushed by the new girl (I apologize I did not catch your name) followed by getting my ass kicked along with Bobby on the “tailpipe”…followed by a pathetic attempt to clean 2 53# KB’s….and then it was over.

  39. Wade Says:

12:30 started DU moved to Tuck Jumps. Love the mystery box. Will miss sugar

  40. Mark Says:

    7:50 subbed tuck jumps

  41. Sammy Says:

    sugar=bad

  42. Patrick Says:

depends on what kinda sugar we are talking about. some sugar is really good and sweet to get.

  43. Eric Says:

6:33? I can’t remember. first 100 DUs were tough, then I finally figured out how to do them over and over which sped up the last 50.

Sam’s warmups and cool downs are win.

  44. Sirkis Says:

we need to have a WOD, throw jump rope for time
